Extension master gardeners at work in the garden.
Douglas County Extension Master Gardeners (EMGs) are volunteers trained in all aspects of horticulture. Our mission is to share research-based, horticultural information with residents of Douglas County, in partnership with K-State Research and Extension. The EMGs help Douglas County residents grow and care for plants, whether they be in your home, in a pot on your porch, or in a garden. Approximately 150 Master Gardeners donate about 8,000 hours of volunteer time each year.

What we do

  • Provide answers to gardening, plant, and pest questions by staffing the Master Gardener Hotline (phone, email, or walk-in).
  • Maintain five Demonstration Gardens in Douglas County which provide gardening inspiration and information about what grows best in our area.
  • Provide horticultural information at public events.
  • Organize the Spring Garden Show, an educational event featuring expert advice, informative presentations, fabulous garden art, and an incredible garage sale.
  • Organize the Garden Tour, providing an opportunity to view some of the most beautiful gardens in our county.
  • Pick up excess produce from the Saturday Farmers’ market vendors and deliver it to Just Food, the Douglas County food bank.
  • Lead children’s programs at the Lawrence Public Library and New York Elementary School.
  • Provide a speaker’s bureau of garden experts for your classroom, garden club, or organization.

Come join us! We love plants and enjoy sharing that love with others.
